Proctor en Monteverde affords sophomores an opportunity to study abroad in Monteverde, Costa Rica. From living with a host family, to studying Spanish and rainforest ecology, to being fully immersed in Costa Rican culture, Morgan ‘25, Reese ‘25, Will ‘25, Bella ‘25, Henry ‘25, and Emma ‘25 have experienced a life-changing term abroad. Each term Proctor en Segovia students live in Spain for more than two months, immersed in Spanish culture, language, and the rhythms of their host families. They exist in an in-between space; they are not quite local residents but are much more than tourists visiting for a day or two. By engaging with locals -- program directors, Spanish faculty, afternoon activity instructors, host families, teammates, and new friends --, they open themselves up to new perspectives and powerful learning experiences.
This week Euro ventured to Madrid, Spain. The week was filled with many art museums, friends, good food, and more.
Proctor Academy's Ocean Classroom program departed Key West and made the transit up the gulf coast of Florida to St. Petersburg, and on to Panama City where the student crew was interviewed by the local news station. Segovia sits 90 km north of Madrid, and the two cities are well connected by high-speed rail. Easy access to Madrid allows Proctor en Segovia students access to the culture, gastronomy, museums, and, yes, fútbol clubs of one of the largest cities in Europe. Ingrid W. Proctor’s Mountain Classroom program enters the second half of their term-long adventure in the American Southwest. As the group continues to learn how to live in community with one another, they also take increased responsibility for the planning of their expeditions. This past week has been amazing, filled with fun excursions, great food, and constant laughter! Our first excursion of the week did not go as planned due to the weather, so instead, we went to the Vasarely Museum and Ikea!
We talk about community and relationships a lot at Proctor. We have a TOGETHER banner hanging on the wall of the Wilkins Meetinghouse. We experience that community and “togetherness” by watching our Hornet teams capture big wins, meeting weekly as advisory groups, or hanging out with friends in a dorm common room.
