With the unknown if interscholastic athletic contests would take place this fall, we already accepted that this would be the most challenging and unique athletic season we have ever faced. What makes athletic programming so valuable is the outlet it provides students and a new environment to learn how to be on a team, lead, win and lose with grace, and exert the built-up physical energy from a full day of classes. It was never a question of if we would have athletics this fall. It was a question of how.
The fall season would not have been possible without the tireless work that all coaches and student-athletes put forth to maintain COVID-19 protocols and expectations during practices and games. Providing a safe and healthy environment for every competition was at the forefront of daily practices and weekend games. We are grateful for the leadership of Director of Athletics, Gregor Makechnie '90, and the athletic department team of Trish Austin '01, Becky Walsh, as well as Athletic Trainers Kelly Griffin-Brown and Chris Jones '04, for supporting all of Proctor's athletes and coaches during this season. We would be remiss not to also recognize fellow Lakes Region schools for committing to agreed-upon protocols to have an interscholastic play safely. As the fall season comes to a close, we reflect on a season that we will never forget.
Marvin Award
Each season, coaches nominate two students for the Marvin Award; an award given to a student who is new to Proctor and has made a considerable impact on his or her team through leadership, ability, and a positive attitude. This fall's Marvin Award Recipients are Mayson Blondek '22 and Cleto Chol '23. Below are words shared by their coaches:
Mayson Blondek '22 - Varsity Field Hockey
Mayson is respectful, fair, and always demonstrates self control. She understands the importance of sportsmanship in competition. Mayson instantly found herself in a leadership position on the field hockey this fall team due to her high level of dedication, athletic ability, and knowledge of the game. It can be difficult for a newcomer to assume a team leadership role, but not so for Mayson. She stepped into the role with ease demonstrating compassion for, and commitment to, teammates. Mayson’s voice can be heard steadily in games and in practices -- sometimes on the field amidst the action and sometimes on the sideline, helping a teammate understand and talk through a previous play. Although Mayson was not officially awarded the title of captain, she stands side by side with our team captains. Mayson leads by doing the “extra.” She stays after practice to work on her shot or to help a teammate fine-tune a technique, and she steps up to help with the extras: washing equipment, cleaning up the field, or just checking in with a teammate. Mayson’s ability and intuition on the field afforded the coaching staff an opportunity to alter the team's usual formation. This season, Mayson played defensive center midfielder, which allowed the team to implement an attacking center midfielder. In this position, Mayson supplied constant support which enabled our offensive to play more aggressively. She has bolstered our transition game, and without her strength, ability, and leadership in this position we would not be 4-1-1 this season.
Cleto Chol '23 - Varsity Football
Cleto Chol is a Wide Receiver and Outside Linebacker who has the physical attributes needed to play his positions at a high level, but that is not what defines him. He arrived at every practice with tenacity and commitment to get better. Cleto is coachable, a sportsman, and a ferocious competitor. What makes his accomplishments on the football field even more impressive is that he does it all with a smile on his face. Being only a sophomore, Cleto has earned his teammates and coaches' respect through his hard work, talent, and leadership. There is no doubt that Cleto is deserving of the Marvin Award.
