Welcoming New Faculty for 2017-2018

Proctor is fortunate to have incredibly low faculty turnover each year, but with bittersweet retirements (we will miss  you Brenda, Laurie, Phil, and Susan!) and shifting roles within the school, we are excited to welcome nine new faculty to the community for the 2017-2018 school year. Over the past few days, this group of dynamic, energized educators has enjoyed (we think!) a thorough orientation to all aspects of life at Proctor. With students arriving in just over a week, we asked each of our new faculty to share a few fun facts about themselves. Enjoy!

What most excites you about joining the Proctor community?

There is a wonderful, warm, welcoming community here that I could feel when I first set foot on campus. I love how everyone embraces being a good steward of not only the environment around us, but also the relationships and responsibilities that make a school thrive.

If you could take part in any of Proctor's off-campus programs, which would it be?

Anything that contains chocolate.

What is highest on your bucket list?

To build a wooden boat - not sure if it will be a Kayak, small skiff, or rowing shell...but I have a goal of building a boat.

What most excites you about joining the Proctor community?
The community, plain and simple. Having been raised in a boarding school atmosphere, the value of community is something that has always kept with me in the highest regards to what an educational experience should be; and you can't beat the community of PA!

If you could take part in any of Proctor's off-campus programs, which would it be?
Ocean Classroom, without a doubt. Learning and working on a schooner is an invaluable opportunity that I believe everyone, of every age, should experience in their life. I have been fortunate to teach and work on an SSV in my previous experiences and I hope I'll be fortunate enough to experience the same in the future!

Favorite outdoor activity?
Discovering a trail with the dog by my side and a book in hand.

Favorite food?
Easy. Pizza.

What is highest on your bucketlist?
The National Parks tour. I would love to explore all 59 (as of now) National Parks; the hiking, photography, and experiences have always been at the top of my list.

I have a soft spot for the ocean and would love to tackle the challenge of Ocean Classroom.

Favorite outdoor activity?

Exploring with my dog, Indy.

Favorite food?

Pomegranate Dark Chocolate ice cream.

What is highest on your bucket list?

Three way tie: Hike Mt. Kilimanjaro, enter and win a pie eating contest, finish reading all of the books on my 'must read' list.

What most excites you about joining the Proctor community?

Proctor’s culture and approach to learning is something I am really looking forward to being a part of. I can’t wait to get to know everyone!

If you could take part in any of Proctor's off-campus programs, which would it be?

All of Proctor’s off-campus programs seem incredible, but if I could take part in one, I’d go with Mountain Classroom. There is so much to explore and learn, not only about the places you travel to, but about yourself as well. With hiking, rock climbing, canoeing, white water rafting, and so much more, you really get to experience it all while developing important skills and knowledge of the land.

Favorite outdoor activity?

I love photography and to play golf.

Favorite food?

Worthy Burger

What is highest on your bucket list?

See the Northern Lights

What most excites you about joining the Proctor community?
The people. I can't wait to meet faculty, staff, and students on the trails, in the dining room, and on the ski hill. Each boarding school has its own unique community and culture defined by its members. I couldn't be more excited to be a part of the Proctor family!

If you could take part in any of Proctor's off-campus programs, which would it be?
Ocean Classroom, no question. Who could say no to spending a semester crewing a 131-foot schooner from New Hampshire to the Caribbean?

Favorite outdoor activity?
Backcountry skiing or mountain biking with my pup, Nala.

Favorite food?
Cheese. Any kind. Every kind.

What is highest on your bucketlist?
This is a tough one. New ideas pop up every day! At the moment, a self-supported mountain bike/surf trip around Vancouver Island, British Columbia with the Nala dog.

What most excites you about joining the Proctor community?

The people. The community here is full of individuals whose commitment and passion elevate the school and make Proctor a great place to be.

If you could take part in any of Proctor's off-campus programs, which would it be?

I think I have to say Mountain Classroom since I will be instructing Mountain this year, but I would also love to be a part of Ocean, or maybe European Art Classroom. Why choose, let's do all three.

Favorite outdoor activity?

I am a big fan of climbing. Some of my best days outside have been spent climbing up big chunks of rock, snow, and ice.

Favorite food?

Whatever the dining commons is serving! Followed closely by lobster rolls and potato donuts.

What is highest on your bucket list?

To build a house.

What most excites you about joining the Proctor community?

I am so excited to be a part of an institution like Proctor that truly commits an inquiry based education into the very fiber of its community. Where learning is as much personal growth and sense of self as much as facts and figures.

If you could take part in any of Proctor's off-campus programs, which would it be?

Mountain Classroom or bust!

Favorite outdoor activity?

Rock climbing, I plan on spending many weekends up North climbing at Cathedral Ledges and Cannon Mountain.

Favorite food?

Any and all Thai food, I have a serious soft spot for massaman curry and mango sticky rice.

What is highest on your bucket list?

My bucket list is infinite and ever growing - right now I'm inspired to bikepack through Morocco and Spain with climbing gear and pack raft into Cirque of the Unclimbables in Canada.
