European Art Classroom: In the Land of Charlie - Paris, France

Jan 26, 2015 6:02:00 AM

We set off on Monday morning before the sun was awake, fighting heavy morning commuter traffic and listening to a French morning radio talk show we couldn’t understand. Cutting it extremely close, we arrived at the train station five minutes before departure time and, after a brief jog through the parking lot, we were safely in our seats with our sights set on the city of lights.

Academic Lens: Finding Our Center

Jan 24, 2015 10:45:50 AM

I had the privilege of sitting in on Lynne Kenney’s Leadership and Ethics class yesterday. Over the past few classes, retired Learning Specialist, Ellen Yenawine, has worked with students to identify their Myers & Briggs type using the MBTI. For more than two decades, Ellen utilized the insights gained through the MBTI to help her Learning Skills students better understand themselves as learners.

Community: The Midpoint

Jan 21, 2015 8:33:00 PM

As Geometry students will tell you, the midpoint formula will give you the midpoint of a line segment. For us, that means finding the midpoint of the academic year: January 21. Midterm grades have been shared with students for the Winter Trimester. Classes are in full swing. Some students are thriving, while others are working through various challenges. Learning Skills tutorials, extra help sessions, and Math First Aid are being utilized.

European Art Classroom - Week One and New Beginnings

Jan 11, 2015 4:34:00 PM

After meeting with Kayden in Boston, we said our final goodbyes and began our two month journey together as a group. Our red eye flight left Boston around 7pm and we didn’t land in Marseille until late the next morning. It was such a relief to see Jen and Dave waiting for us by the baggage claim. Although the group was both excited and sleep deprived we had finally arrived and were ready to hit the ground running.

Academic Lens: Why Formative Assessment Matters

Jan 5, 2015 9:57:00 PM

Monday, faculty gathered for a day of professional development centered around the concept of formative assessment. The day was structured to discuss how formative assessment links to faculty professional development over the summer and to Proctor’s Profile of a Graduate. In essence: how do we take the science around learning and put it into practice in our classrooms?

Academic Lens: Taking Care of Our Garden

Dec 19, 2014 8:30:00 AM

Proctor Academy's 2500 acres of woodlands are one of our most prized possessions. This diverse ecological habitat spans from the top of Ragged Mountain to the Blackwater River and is home to one of Proctor’s most dynamic classrooms.

Academic Lens: A Live Look

Dec 16, 2014 3:02:00 PM

As we have known for years at Proctor given our five term-long off-campus programs, a 'classroom' can be anywhere learners gather. Today we provide a brief window (literally thanks to Livestream!) into one of our classrooms where Tom Morgan's Ecological Literature class joined Adam Jones' Globalization class to discuss overlaps in their curricula. This collaborative approach proved fruitful for both classes.
